Moulin à Vent La Rochelle

Moulin à Vent is called the king of Beaujolais. This is the Cru with the greatest cellaring potential and that resembles its Burgundian neighbours the most. After a few years in the bottle, it is sometimes said to ‘pinote’ or take on Pinot Noir characteristics. This cuvée is the expression of an alliance between finesse and power. La Rochelle is one of the terroirs most suited to cellaring in the Moulin à Vent appellation area, it is concentrated and powerful with a broad palette of aromas and great complexity.

The personality of this cuvée

History of the cuvée: purchased in 2002 by Martine and Pierre-Marie Chermette, the vineyard at La Rochelle overlooks the famous antique moulin à vent or windmill that gives the appellation its name. It is southeast facing with a subsoil rich in manganese, giving the wine quite a noble disposition. This Moulin à Vent requires some time to peak and can be laid down for 10 to 15 years.

From the vine to the glass

Grape variety: the 2 ha (5 acre) plot at La Rochelle in the Moulin à Vent appellation area is planted with Gamay. The soil is varied granite with manganese. Integrated, eco-friendly vinegrowing, goblet pruning, manual harvest at peak ripeness. Traditional semi-carbonic Beaujolais vinification, 10 to 12 day barrel maceration, no seeding with yeast, no chaptalisation, minimum use of SO2, pneumatic pressing. Maturing in barrels that are 1 to 5 years old for 8 months.


Cellaring: up to 15 years. Peak: between 6 and 10 years.
Serving temperature: 14 °C (57°F).

Food and wine matches

Land game terrine, rabbit in mustard sauce, hare à la royale, duck, grilled loin of park with cinnamon roasted figs, all red meat, truffled beef cheek, game, venison cushion or ribs with fresh figs and pheasant with cabbage, it’s a great partner to dishes with morel mushrooms and camembert or matured Saint Marcellin cheese.

Tasting notes

Eye – Deep ruby with crimson tints, limpid and shiny, thick tears.
Nose – Intensely fruity with raspberry at the fore, followed by more pronounced touches of buttered brioche and chocolate on the second nose.
Palate – refined and airy, suave and full attack, round and voluptuous mouthfeel. Juicy raspberry flavours. Buttery and brioche notes at the end to add fattiness to the raspberry. Lovely balance for this cuvée with great length and an exceptional finish.
